How can we conceive and visulise the discursive space of RFID?
Everybody seems to be guessing about the future potential and implementation of Radio Frequency Identification tags whilst nobody seems to have a good overview . ‘Experts’ are starting to emerge that try to shape the language that we are using to discuss this technology. For example Bruce Sterling coined the biological metaphor of ‘Arphids’, Kathrine Albright suggests ‘Spychips’ while the corporate lobby are pushing ‘Green Tags’ that emphasise the potential for recycling.
What quickly becomes clear is that the technology as well as the metaphors around it are not fully formed yet. This socio/techno/cultural space is a hotly fought over battleground of language. The aim of the RFID map is to provide an overview of this battle that is so sorely lacking at the moment. What are the corporate, consumer and activist lexicons that are starting to emerge around this technology? The early knowledge of these lexicons allows us the time to intervene tactically and shape the techology towards more open and democratic ends.
We will soon be releasing here a series of topic focused digital + printed maps under a Creative Commons licence. There will also be and extremly large “Bayeux Tapestry” wall print to try and show the connections between language and actor networks.
In order to gather the data for the map, we are currently organising participatory workshops as well as interviewing people with experience and ideas around RFID.
Please contact us if you would like to invite us for a workshop, be interviewed or exhibit some of our maps!
There have been many collaborators at the 2 workshops so far in Orleans and Bourges, France.
